Labor is hoping popular state Premier Mark McGowan will be its ticket to picking up more seats in Western Australia, which is shaping up as a key battleground in next week’s federal election.
But even in the 2007 Rudd-slide, Labor gained one seat and lost two in WA. Since then, they’ve won just one – Anne Aly in Cowan in 2016 – and picked up another when the seat of Burt was created in a safe Labor area. The candidates in Swan are Kristy McSweeney – a public relations professional, political staffer and Sky News commentator – and engineer and renewable energy consultant Zaneta Mascarenhas.at a pre-poll booth, Mascarenhas is on message against the Morrison government.
“The prime minister referring to a strong economy is actually about WA and our resource sector,” he said. Another caller fretted that an Albanese Labor government would scrap WA’s special arrangement on GST distribution. McGowan played up to his subjects and told other premiers to move on from their “envy” and manage their finances better.
