Australia's koala population has taken an 'extraordinary hit' in the fires and could be formally classified as 'endangered', Environment Minister Sussan Ley says, announcing a $50 million commitment to helping animal populations devastated by the fires.

A $50 million "initial" wildlife recovery fund from the Morrison government merely hints at the scale of devastation this summer's extreme bushfires have wrought on native flora and fauna.

Not only have the fires killed vast numbers of threatened species, their extent and intensity has severely damaged the condition of what were previously healthy populations of common plants and animals.Credit:Environment Minister Sussan Ley said Australia's koala population has taken an "extraordinary hit" in the fires and could be formally classified as "endangered" as she announced a $50 million funding commitment to help animal populations devastated by the fires.

In the wake of the damage to koalas and their habitat, Ms Ley said, "it may be necessary... to see whether in certain parts of the country, koalas move from where they are, which is often vulnerable, up to endangered".

OUr hearts go out to all of them. How can we all help?

Back that up fed gov with a massive reduction in foreign aid especially to countries that foster terrorism as their natural way of life

My heart aches for every Koala alive and passed on. It is an unimaginable tragedy. To hear that they could be classified as endangered, is very worrying. The country cannot have a repetition of 2019 bush fires 🔥 this year. The govt I voted for needs to take action NOW. 🐨🦘🦜🦔

Terrible. Refuse to allow the removal of logs on the ground because of the threat and impact to the biodiversity and fauna. Hazard reduction burns are reduced because of the threat to local fauna (they burn slower and allow time for animals to move) Nat parks effectively 🔒 up.

60 minutes, reporting on govt collusion with corporations and how they're screwing with the environment, farms and live...

sussanley ? Is that who the Environment Minister is? Wow! Where has she been?

😪😑

Oh she’s resurfaced? Probably been busy looking at more apartments on the Gold Coast away from the fires & smoke!

$50 Million would be well spent on burn offs and clearing. Lets get back to traditional prevention rather than dirty deals with Greens.

50000 years the aboriginal people have lived in harmony with their land, unique animals & water... In just 200 years of the colonial parasite taking hold the, aboriginal faced genocide... Now the land faces genocide.. This is a greed arrogant corporate govt made disaster...

The whiteman parasitic corporate government, must give back or involve fair dinkum aboriginal advisory... Not this fabricated garbage that suit a few major deals struck by corrupt self serving legislation.... This is the fucking result..

It’s a shame that innocent animals suffer and die because of humanities choices.

Sad!

$50 mill will not replace their homes or supply food & water until nature repairs Bush land & old growth trees.

She needs to resign. Sorry; I understand that this is environmental law and it’s not reasonable to have living organisms killed in this manner.

This picture makes me cry

Who is the money designated to go to ~ another dodgy LNP grifter business registered at a beach shack?
