Mining magnate Andrew Forrest has launched another blistering tirade in his war with Facebook, accusing the social media giant of turning a blind eye to scam ads and knowingly profiting from the work of criminals.
The release of the four-minute video comes just hours ahead of two milestone court hearings in his lawsuits against Meta, both in Australia and abroad. “I’ve repeatedly asked Facebook to remove the thousands of scam ads featuring my image, but they continue to proliferate, with Facebook’s knowledge, on their paid advertising campaigns,” Forrest said.“This law, this well-meaning law going back into the dark ages, well before the digital platforms even existed, actually gives full immunity for the content published on any of the company’s platforms, designed, of course, to help the internet.
And he called on the social media companies to use their deep pockets to safeguard their users, particularly when it came to content designed to swindle those most vulnerable. “Social media is part of our lives, so it’s in the public interest that we keep it, but not for fraud to be perpetrated on those social media platforms, for criminals to knowingly — with Facebook’s knowledge — use those platforms yet not do their power to eliminate it.”
The charges stem from allegations levelled in 2022 that Meta breached Australian anti-money laundering laws by failing to stop the publication of scam ads using his image.
