Select Kmart stores will from this week set aside two hours for a new program, providing a low-sensory environment for sensitive shoppers.

The “Quiet Space” program every Wednesday from 3.30pm to 5.30pm will involve changes to the in-store environment, including dimmed lighting, quieter music, register and scanner volumes, and limited trolley collections.

No PA announcements will be made unless there is an emergency, and more team members will be available to support customers. “We understand retail stores are high-sensory environments and we hope the introduction of ‘Quiet Space’ will giver some of our Kmart customers and communities time and space to calm their sensory systems,” the Wesfarmers-owned chain said on Monday.

Kmart said the aim of the program, which begins this week, was to create an accessible, inclusive and welcoming environment for all shoppers.to help customers plan their trip. The programs have been developed with help from disability advocacy organisations around Australia and New Zealand.
