Shoppers were baffled by the discount department store’s dramatically empty shelves this year. And now we know how it happened.

Parent company Wesfarmers delivered its 2020 full year results briefing on Thursday, playing up a 10.5 per cent revenue jump to $30.8 billion.

Kmart Group revenue also climbed 7.2 per cent to $9.2 billion – but a brutal question during the question-and-answer session revealed the result wasn’t completely rosy. He asked whether there was “something a little deeper” going on, claiming it was an issue that had plagued Kmart on several occasions even before the pandemic hit.

He said as a result, they “made the call” to “back off volume in anticipation of lower demand” during the crisis.“We did not anticipate the speed of improvementy in Australia – April was a tough month but May was extraordinary in terms of turnaround,” Mr Bailey said.
