King Island — a remote parcel of land halfway between Tasmania and Victoria — is building a reputation for award-winning cheeses and golf courses, but it's beef that keeps the community going.

"We said to [the farmers] 'this won't work unless you are committed'," EAT Group director Phil McFarlane said.

King Island provides approximately 20 per cent of the cattle slaughtered by existing abattoirs in Tasmania, and extra competition for that cattle could boost prices for islanders. "They will almost certainly increase their buy price and that will test whether or not the [exclusive] agreement that EAT Group have with producers is solid."While the King Island project is being welcomed by some islanders it could have ramifications for beef producers in Tasmania.

Where does the think cheese comes from?

Beef. The only real superfood. It's the only thing I eat and I've never felt better. I wonder if a vegan could survive a week on tofu alone.

W-were did you think the cheese came from?
