The court had earlier heard Herrmann’s lawyer claim his client was “no monster” despite raping, killing and setting fire to the young international student as she walked home in Melbourne.Aiia Maasarwe, 21, had just phoned her sister after getting off a tram at Bundoora in January when Herrmann beat her over the head with a metal pole until she passed out, dragged her into bushes and raped her.
He then doused her with a can of flammable WD-40 spray and set her on fire in a bid to destroy the evidence, Victoria’s Supreme Court was told.Herrmann passed a note to his defence team with a handwritten apology note for his victim’s family, who are travelling to Melbourne. “I’m sorry, your daughter didn’t deserve such a terrible and tragic thing to happen to her,” he wrote.
