Usman Khawaja was a perfectly executed reverse sweep away from fulfilling a boyhood dream of scoring a Test hundred in Pakistan on Sunday, just a few kilometres from where he was born, on a day that Australia’s batters cashed in on a highway of a pitch and keep themselves in the first match of the series.
As Khawaja eyed off a third Test ton from five innings since coming back into this Australian XI, he pulled out a reverse sweep on 97, which had been a productive shot throughout the morning. It was, however, an innings with some luck. Khawaja was dropped twice, first on 22 in the gully by Fawad Alam, who didn’t bat or bowl in the opening eight sessions, before a tough chance was put down by Mohammad Rizwan behind the stumps as the Australian reverse-swept on 69.
Resuming at 0-5, the childhood mates began with excellent intent on a very hard pitch that is holding together nicely.
