The AFL will defend claims it should have done more to protect past players who were allegedly subject to racist abuse during their careers after a class action led by North Melbourne great Phil Krakouer was lodged in the Supreme Court.
Phil and his brother were allegedly goaded by opposition players to provoke them to retaliate while Daniher, who was Essendon captain, was named as allegedly calling Krakouer racist names during the 1982 elimination final. The claim also outlines articles that media outlets published in the ’80s and ’90s that referred to Indigenous players being abused or being subject to racism while on the field.
The AFL said in a statement that it would defend the claims while admitting there had been racism in Australian rules football. “While we work through the Margalit Lawyers class action, we will continue our ongoing work against racism and discrimination with our clubs, our players, our staff and our supporters to promote football environments at all levels around the country that are safe and respectful for all.
