Principals say the NSW government has no plan behind its ambitious policy to deliver rapid antigen tests and vaccines to tens of thousands of year 12s, nor answers to questions such as what to do about students who refuse to comply or teachers who don’t want to return.
However, there was no detail about how the government would procure the tests or how often they would be used. Therapeutic Goods Administration rules say these tests - sometimes involving deep nasal swabs - must be administered by a health professional. At some schools in Sydney there are hundreds of year 12 students on site, such as Knox Grammar, with 350 and Blackwattle Bay campus of Sydney Secondary College with 400. Some wealthier private schools employ nurses, but most public schools and smaller private schools do not.
“What happens if teachers just refuse to come? The government said last week that employers cannot force employees to go to work.” A spokesman for the Education Minister Sarah Mitchell said those details were still being worked out. Ms Mitchell said the plan was about giving students a chance to sit the HSC. “This is a challenge that is worth undertaking for our students,” she said. “Nothing is more important than education, and our HSC students in particular need certainty.
But others said it raised more questions. Peter Rompies, the deputy principal of Al Faisal College in Auburn, has three campuses in hotspot Local Government Areas with about 120 year 12 students.
JordsBaker Doing well in HSC is the ticket to University. If I were in year 12, I wouldn’t have missed it. Just wear masks and be careful.
JordsBaker Message: Stay home! Only see one person outside your home! Assume everyone you encounter has Covid! This kills and makes young people very sick! Message to HSC students: Go to school with hundreds to take a test. It's fine. Some will get a Covid Vax too late. Others? Good luck!
JordsBaker makes you wonder how the NSW health experts come up with their decisions......?
