Former deputy Liberal leader Julie Bishop has backed an inquest into the death of the woman who accused federal Attorney-General Christian Porter of raping her in 1988 - a claim he vehemently denies | latikambourke

Former deputy Liberal leader Julie Bishop has backed an inquest into the death of the woman who accused federal Attorney-General Christian Porter of raping her in 1988 - a claim he vehemently denies.

“It’s within the criminal system, there are checks and balances, there are statutory powers, it has legal standing and so that is the next step and I understand from media reporting that that’s what the family would welcome,” Ms Bishop said. Police did not pursue the allegations against Mr Porter at the request of the woman just before she took her own life last year.

“As somebody who has employed many people over many, many years, if someone had come to me with an allegation of rape that occurred, as it turned out in my office, but in a workplace for which I’m responsible, I would have felt a duty not only to that person but to others in the workplace to inform the police,” she said.

Gender quotas make women 'permanent second-class citizens': Bishop | Sky News AustraliaFormer Speaker of the House Bronwyn Bishop says gender quotas are 'absolute anathema' because they turn women into 'second-class citizens'.\n\n“When we go to the question of quotas – to me they are absolute anathema', she told Sky News host Gary Hardgrave.\n\n“What the Liberal party is all about is equality of opportunity – not equality of outcome.\n\n“The question of what’s going on in parliament house with regard to bad behaviour and the number of women who are in the parliament – are two separate things.\n\n“There is a need to have women’s voices in the parliament because they look at things very often sometimes differently and they think about policies from a different perspective.\n\n“You don’t go in there to be interested in women’s issues only- you are interested in those but it is right across the board.\n\n“If you go the quota route – you make women permanent second-class citizens.”\n Like the one that was prime minister? But rich ones. As a female Lib, Bronwyn would know a lot about being treated like a second-class citizen! What did they ever let her do in her career?!
