Earlier this year, Joseph Ebborn, 18, left the notorious Don Dale Youth Detention Centre after spending nearly six years in and out of the Northern Territory's youth prisons.

Darwin rapper Joseph Ebborn feels liberated when he's on stage. He likens it to talking to a crowd, blindfolded.

His songs, penned inside his cell, span the trajectory of his life from what he describes as a "traumatic" childhood to foster care, homelessness, substance addiction and youth detention. But he was still couch surfing and had developed a cannabis addiction, so he often breached his conditions and ended up back inside.

Joseph started writing a diary and putting the words to music with the help of local rapper Riley Page, who volunteered to do workshops with young people in Don Dale. During his last stint in detention, Joseph completed his year 12 studies and gained certificates in construction, automotive and wildlife management.
