Perth businessman John Poynton agreed to provide confidential information about Crown businesses to James Packer as part of $50,000-a-year consultancy, the Perth Casino Royal Commission has been told.

He was appointed to the board of Burswood Limited, a company associated with Crown Perth, as a non-executive director by Mr Packer in 2004, not long after he acquired the Perth casino.Mr Poynton eventually joined the board of Crown Resorts, the parent company of the Crown group of businesses, and became its chair in early 2020, but ultimately resigned after what he called "pressure" from now-chair Helen Coonan and the New South Wales gambling watchdog.
