New Rugby Australia chairman Hamish McLennan has appointed former prime minister John Howard, former Governor-General Sir Peter Cosgrove and Wallabies legend John Eales to a new seven-person advisory board to oversee Australia’s 2027 Rugby World Cup bid.

Wallabies captain John Eales and Prime Minister John Howard after the 2001 British and Irish Lions decider.Australia last hosted a Rugby World Cup in 2003 when Howard was prime minister. The Wallabies lost to England 20-17 in a thrilling final, remembered for Jonny Wilkinson's late drop-goal. However, RA was confident of winning hosting rights to the 2021 Women's World Cup before New Zealand pipped them at the post.

In a statement, McLennan said: “The 2027 Rugby World Cup is an incredible opportunity for rugby and for our country and we have signalled our intentions clearly by bringing together some of the greatest minds in rugby, politics, business and the tourism sector to deliver a winning bid for Australia.
