NSW Police believe Joel Cauchi, who recently moved to Sydney, lived with schizophrenia and are investigating a potential history of targeting women.

“He was weird … a guy who liked his knives,” said one man who recalled sharpening Cauchi’s knives when he lived in Queensland.Speaking on condition of anonymity to protect his business, the man said he sharpened two eight-inch knives of Cauchi’s.

“He wasn’t right, he was a weird-looking cat. His words were ‘these are my everyday knives’. I thought, why? They’re not even decent knives. He wasn’t a passionate knifey, but a guy who liked his knives. I didn’t know why he said everyday knives.” Police sources not authorised to speak publicly said Cauchi was known to police in Queensland but did not have a criminal record.It was unclear on Sunday morning what had drawn him to the attention of police in the past. Cauchi was not known to NSW Police.On Sunday, NSW Police said Cauchi had recently moved to Sydney and had rented a storage unit in the inner city.Police believe Cauchi lived with schizophrenia. They were investigating a potential history of targeting women.

Cauchi had listed himself on Empire Escorts, a website on which anyone can upload a profile and solicit for sex work, in Sydney in June last year.Six days ago, he posted on a Bondi Facebook page asking if anyone would like to join him for a surf. He had previously also posted looking for “someone who does astrophotography that doesnt mind me tagging along to learn a bit” and joined Facebook pages for singles in NSW and nudists in Melbourne.

Cauchi was also a prolific online business reviewer, posting his verdicts on a Toowoomba strip club , Palm Beach and a Chippendale cafe .
