Opposition Leader AlboMP has criticised the federal government’s JobMaker plan for only incentivising employers to hire Australians under the age of 35, claiming older workers are “being left behind”.

Opposition Leader Anthony Albanese has criticised the federal government’s JobMaker plan for only incentivising employers to hire Australians under the age of 35, claiming older workers are “being left behind”. Labor will be pressured to pass the wage subsidy scheme – which will see employers receive between $100 and $200 a week for hiring a worker between 16 and 35 years of age – when parliament resumes today.

Mr Albanese told Sky News Labor’s primary issue with the scheme “isn’t that younger people are being given support, it’s the 928,000 people who get no support”. He said a common aspect of a recession was “it was often older workers who lose their jobs and some of them never work again”. “What we need to do is make sure out of this recession that people aren’t left behind,” he said. “Too many people have been left behind during the pandemic by being left out of wage subsidies.
