Over a third of US workers who lost jobs or saw their hours reduced because of the coronavirus pandemic will have trouble paying their bills, according to a survey.

Brutal weekly unemployment numbers underscored the coronavirus pandemic's continued ability to destroy jobs in the United States, bringing the total to 36.5 million in two months as President Donald Trump and his allies pushed to reopen the world's largest economy.

"Good numbers coming out of States that are opening. America is getting its life back!" Mr Trump tweeted after the data's release, later saying that he was"very disappointed" in the way China handled the virus, which first emerged in the city of Wuhan. Many newly jobless have found themselves in a precarious financial position, with more than a third reporting trouble paying their bills and nearly half unable to afford a $400 emergency, the Federal Reserve said in a survey released Thursday.

White House economic adviser Kevin Hassett said the latest data indicated the recent flood of claims was ebbing.

At a guess this will apply to most countries around the world.

I think most debt will have to be forgiven in Australia (at least) where our debt per household is massive. If we want a country full of angry, sad, psychotic and depressed people, the government needs to make a plan. But even before the pandemic they had no ideas and no plans.

You don't need a survey to tell you this

Australia 'caught in US-China crossfire' and 'there will be serious economic implications' | Sky News AustraliaThe Switzer Report founder Peter Switzer says now is the worst time to be caught up in escalating trade tensions with China. \n\n“Once the economy’s back on its feet, that’s when it’s time to get stuck into China, but at the moment we’re vulnerable,” he said. \n\n“Obviously there’s a simmering, potential trade war and it really didn’t start with us, but we’re being caught in the crossfire because we ganged up and supported Trump in asking for an objective inquiry into China’s behavior in relation to the virus. \n\n“Clearly China’s cheesed off in the fact that we’re supporting Donald Trump and there will be serious economic implications.' \n\nMr Switzer told Sky News “this is not the time” because Australia was staring down the possibility of a great depression, which he said the government was so far managing to avoid through stimulus measures. \n Business people should be made to disclose their China exposure before making such comments, my trust is wearing thin. Thx for the obvious advice. You mean at the beginning of a recession- depression were every $ counts. Duh!

Scientists put 'handbrake' on Trump's plan to reopen US economy | Sky News AustraliaSky News contributor Michael Ware says US President Donald Trump’s own medical experts have put the “handbrake” on the nation's economic reopening which “no one wants to hear”. \n\nOne of the senior scientists in Trump’s coronavirus task force, Dr Anthony Facui, testified before Congress and warned that reopening too soon could result in many more deaths and infections. \n\nHe warned it would also lead to a backward step for the economy. \n\nMr Ware told Sky News Dr Fauci was one of four scientists who called on the states to slow down the reopening of their economies. \n\n“This senate hearing is precisely about the push and the pull of the economy and the politics that want to open versus the science that says we have to go slowly,” he said. \n\n“Everyone is emphasising the fact that we need to reopen in a new world where we learn to live with this invisible killer.” \n\nImage: AP realDonaldTrump realDonaldTrump Fauci is right realDonaldTrump These 'Scientists' haven't got a clue what day it is. They are running on an agenda rather than any real scientific facts.
