Treasurer Josh Frydenberg says the JobKeeper program, while necessary during the early stages of the pandemic, was now being phased out after it was discovered the welfare subsidy disincentivised employment. “As restrictions continue to ease across the country, we need to ensure that our policies are supporting and accelerating the recovery,” he said. “Our crisis response policies were the right ones to get us to this point.
“In Treasury's review of the JobKeeper program in June, they found that the JobKeeper program has a number of features that created adverse incentives which may become more pronounced over time as the economy recovers,” he said. Mr Frydenberg said the review indicated JobKeeper was “dampening the incentives to work, hampering labour mobility … and it keeps businesses afloat that would not be viable without ongoing support".
