Jimmy Anderson has announced that the first Test against West Indies at Lord’s in July will mark his farewell from international cricket.that this summer would be Anderson’s last as a Test cricketer after the 41-year-old held talks with the England head coach, Brendon McCullum, who wants to build an attack for the long haul. But there will not be a lengthy wave goodbye from England’s leading wicket-taker, with Anderson stating on Instagram that he will depart after the series opener.
Anderson has not played a match since the final Test of England’s 4-1 series defeat by India in March, missing the first five games of Lancashire’s County Championship season to manage his body before the Test summer. His county have four more Championship fixtures before the first Test against West Indies, which begins 10 July.
Stationed on 700 Test wickets – the only fast bowler to have got there – Anderson could still surpass Shane Warne, the next man on the all-time charts with 708. Muttiah Muralitharan, on 800, can rest easy. Standing on 987 international wickets, Anderson will have to produce the finest performance of an England career that began in December 2002 to get to four figures.
While the prospect of a fairytale finish at Old Trafford, his home ground, has been ruled out, Lord’s is the venue he has frequented the most as a Test cricketer, playing 28 matches and taking 119 wickets there at an average of 25.15. Thanking his family, Anderson added: “I couldn’t have done it without the love and support of Daniella, Lola, Ruby and my parents. A huge thank you to them. Also, thank you to the players and coaches who have made this the best job in the world.Subscribe to our cricket newsletter for our writers' thoughts on the biggest stories and a review of the week’s action“I’m excited for the new challenges that lie ahead, as well as filling my days with even more golf.
