Labor frontbencher Jim Chalmers is seriously considering a tilt at the Labor leadership in competition with Anthony Albanese.

"I'm considering it," Mr Chalmers told the Q&A program last night."I don't think it's unreasonable that a few of us take some time to work out what we want to do — remember we were hoping to be forming a cabinet this week.

"I want to play a substantial role in rebuilding our electoral fortunes, a rebuilding of our policies up to the next election."If Mr Chalmers and Mr Albanese are both endorsed as candidates at a meeting of Labor's national executive on Wednesday, then they would also need to convince party members in a leadership ballot.

Mr Chalmers also represents Queensland, a state where the Labor party performed poorly and failed to win a seat north of the Brisbane River. But Mr Albanese has been a leadership contender for much longer than Mr Chalmers and told 7.30 last night that he is the best person to do the job. "I'm someone who can walk into a pub in Hughenden, or walk into a boardroom in George Street, Sydney, and have a discussion with people that is based on mutual respect and on dealing pretty frankly with people.

Jim Chalmers should run for leaders ship . He is smart, calm, vise , very good communicator. He would make great leader .

the only way labour can ever get back in is by splitting into a walk both sides of the fence type coalition like the lnp hard right +hard left then reunifies in government

He is intelligent, but that does not mean he is any less deluded than the core leadership team who ran the SS Labor aground in clear weather.

Why do “journalists” refer to this natural occurrence of a party voting for a leader as a ‘battle’ ... Whether it’s Labor or like the recent parade of pms from the far right extremists unless they’ve been usurped it’s just an election process of similar minded people..?

Good grief you hack journalists! No wonder no one gets accurate information. This article purports to present a profile of Jim Chalmers but you can’t even grasp the fact he has a PhD in Political Science, so his correct title is DR Chalmers, as it is for Adam Bandt & Andrew Leigh

Jim, i love you, but stand down. Albo has been a loyal soldier. Let him have it.

We need a wide and diverse range of candidates to compete for the Labor leadership. Each will need to justify why they think they are worthy of the role, and how they might make a real difference. The choice of the next Labor leader needs to be thought about very carefully.

Labor diversity; Choice between 2 white men. The lefties heads will explode.

Tony Abbott is the worst person in Australia I can’t wait to see him kicked out like a dog on Saturday night auspol ausvotes Why are you just parroting what he said, as though that in itself is newsworthy? What makes Abbott's tweet newsworthy is that it underscores his lack of class, grace, basic knowledge of history, & all-round lack of suitability for public office. Put that in your headline. Looking forward to TonyAbbottMHR losing his seat on Saturday.
