But industry representatives dispute the claim, and said temperatures and rainfall could be contributing to jellyfish blooms.
The Tasmanian Salmon Growers Association said blooms occurred before salmon farming was undertaken in the state, and Huon Aquaculture said the blooming events had occurred for the past 40 years, infrequently."We do have good data from places overseas that shows aquaculture stimulates the growth of the very organisms that cause problems for the aquaculture industry," she said.
"It's a vicious cycle, where the aquaculture is making the problem worse, that is then impacting them.She said it was an area of science that needed attention.Huon has tried mitigation strategies, including towing pens slowly through the water to allow the jellyfish to be pushed through the net.The jellyfish can kill the salmon and affect their growth, as well as fish later suffering from gill necrosis, a secondary impact.
"They [jellyfish] are not lethal to most species, but what they do is sting, and it causes a little tiny injury and that can get infected," she said. Dr Gershwin has collected jellyfish samples from the Huon River, which is home to dozens of species of tiny jellyfish.
This expert didn't warn, she hypothesised. And what's a hypothesis without evidence? It's just a theory.
