Sceptics have characterised the AUKUS agreement between three Anglosphere Western nations as a throwback to some kind of “White Man’s Burden” in Asia, even though modern Australia, Britain and America are three of the most successful immigrant-receiving, multicultural and diverse nations in the world.
And it would open the way for its East Asian neighbour South Korea – which shares the same concerns about China’s aggression – to come on board. And it would follow the Philippines, Indonesia, Singapore and Malaysia having signalled their support or at least acceptance of AUKUS. AUKUS’s hard power deterrence complements Australia’s membership of the Quad with America, Japan and India, and its network of regional defence partnerships with Japan, South Korea and the Philippines.
