The ruling is the first in Japan on the legality of same-sex marriages and is being seen by advocates as a major symbolic victory.

A Japanese district court has ruled the nation's failure to allow same-sex couples to marry is "unconstitutional".They do not have the legal rights provided to heterosexual couplesThe decision sets a new precedent in Japan — the only G7 nation not to fully recognise a same-sex partnership — but it has rejected demands to pay damages.

As it currently stands, a person in a same-sex relationship cannot inherit their partner's assets, such as the house they may have shared, and they also have no parental rights to any children their partners may have. Homosexual sex has been legal in Japan since 1880, but social attitudes keep the LGBT+ community largely invisible.

But the recognition that not allowing them to marry was unconstitutional was the victory the plaintiffs, their lawyers, and activists had been hoping for as a key symbolic step and precedent.
