Japan's new Prime Minister, Yoshihide Suga, says he plans to make coronavirus measures mandatory for the first time, punish rule violators and provide economic compensation as his government struggles to slow the ongoing virus upsurge.
Japan has managed several outbreaks since January with health recommendations, widespread use of masks and aggressive contact tracing.Suga said experts are discussing the legislation to make the coronavirus more effectively enforced and hoped to submit the bill for parliamentary approval “as soon as possible” next year.
But cases are now increasing rapidly – there were 2950 coronavirus diagnoses in Japan yesterday although the death toll remains low, with 35 new COVID-19 fatalities overnight.Japan has just barred all non-resident foreigners after detecting seven cases in two days of the more contagious coronavirus strain that was first identified in Britain earlier this month.
Tokyo reported a record rise in coronavirus cases at the weekend, hitting a daily record of 949 just as Japan heads into New Year holidays that normally lead people to stream from the capital into the provinces.
