A man who fired several shots inside the Canberra Hospital, growled, spat and kicked at police as they tried to subdue him, a Canberra court has heard.He attacked the two police officers guarding him, stealing one of their gunsJames William Shearer, 28, was sentenced to 11 years and six months in jail by the ACT Supreme Court today, over an incident in July 2018 when four shots were fired in the hospital's emergency department.
Shearer had grabbed a glock pistol from one of two officers sent to guard him when he launched a surprise attack, which included throwing a chair.In the violent struggle which followed, Justice David Mossop described how one of the officers fell to the ground as Shearer was holding the gun.Events leading up to the shooting
Shearer was in hospital recovering from the effects of drugs after a chaotic rampage through Canberra.Later, he tried to get into cars stopped at traffic lights — on one occasion Shearer grabbed the handle of a ute which he held onto until it drove off and he fell to the ground.
