Jada Pinkett Smith is hopeful her husband Will Smith and Chris Rock can reconcile after the infamous Oscars slap before she made a bizarre statement about the pair.

Smith shocked the world and hundreds of celebrity A-listers in attendance when he stormed on stage and slapped Chris Rock after he made a joke at his wife's expense.

Smith was widely criticised for slapping Rock with calls for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to revoke his Best Actor award for his role in King Richard.

“I would like to publicly apologise to you, Chris. I was out of line and I was wrong. I am embarrassed and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be,” he wrote in a social media post. In Smith’s apology he had accepted jokes at his expense are “part of the job” but said a joke about Pinkett Smith’s medical condition was “too much for me to bear” and caused him to lash out.
