Comment: It takes more than alcohol to make a successful night-time economy

released this week with its cross party representation seeks to achieve the ''right balance''. To temper the tension between two compelling competing sets of statistics – the potential $43 billion economic benefit of vibrant night activity, and the health and social cost of some 1921 fewer alcohol-related incidents.

Music, performing arts, cultural events and festivals are the hallmarks of the night in thriving global cities. Bryant Park in New York, once high in crime is now instead high on the list for locals and tourists to catch movies, practice yoga, play board games and walk the dog once the sun goes down.

A diverse and distributed night-time economy also demands a robust late-night public transport system; one that prioritises accessibility, frequency and is multi-modal, enabling increased foot traffic which in turn encourages cafes, bookstores, retail and speciality stores to open their doors later into the night. The inquiry recommendation for a 24-hour train servicing key precincts is commendable but time is not on our side.

Interest rates were at 7%+ prior to the last GFC. What are they now? There’s a reason they’re cutting rates like there’s no tomorrow and it isn’t because of this full employment bs. The system is very sick, they just not telling you. Jess_Irvine Interest rates were historically lowered in response to high oil prices in 2008 and later during the shale oil boom 2011-2014. In so far the housing sector is collateral damage of an oil crisis. On top of that the Fed's crazy idea to grow the GDP with the help of rich immigrants
