Spilt coffee, stale McDonald's chips and a half-eaten dim sim are among the delights that might greet Melbourne commuters on their tram or train ride home on a Saturday night.Cr Nick Reece would ban eating and drinking on public transport if he could.
Cr Reece says he would be in favour of a food and drink ban on all Melbourne public transport, and there are already rules in place about it "for good reason"."Obesity is a modern health epidemic … and eating on public transport is not polite, it's not good for the dry cleaning bill and it's not good for community health either."
She says the types of food outlets at Southern Cross and Flinders Street stations need to be assessed as there are "much more unhealthy than healthy options". Metro Trains says it is up to the Department of Transport to instigate a ban. The state government often reviews initiatives on public transport networks from around the world, according to a department spokesman, however it has "no current plans to ban food on trains"."In an effort to keep buses clean for all customers, avoid eating or drinking on the bus and take your rubbish with you," its website says.
A thousand percent agree with this proposal. The smell, the mouth-sounds, the mess, all while you're jam-packed in together. Gross, gross, gross.
The smell of curry is the worst
Just back from Japan NO food and phones on silent NO calls Love Love Love
It will stop the pigs leaving food scraps behind.
A point that everybody is missing: You can simply move carriages, there are 3 possible ones to choose from when your inside the train and 6 when you about to get on.
Trains: 30 minute journey. You:
Let’s ban eating on public transport and remove advertising at stations to tackle obesity! That’s sounds like giving a man a fish?! Why not educate people on what a healthy diet is. That way they can fish for their own food or whatever, you get it!
Then they shld ban stinky people onboard public transport as well. Lately the influx of certain ethnic groups in Melb is causing me grief, migrain, nausea and I am not alone! Ban them instead of food. I use public transport EVERY working day. I have the right to travel in peace.
After a years in politics this is the type of issue that plays on the mind of Nicholas_Reece ? Sure people should consider others in their food choices on public transport but a blanket ban is just more nanny state crap.
Ban cos food stinks? FFS. The real problem esp at summer are PEOPLE who reeks to high heavens in packed trains & trams. Bus drivers of some ethnicity too! Even the former Lord Mayor of Melbourne tweeted a reminder to use deodorant a few times during start of Summer. truth smh
More communist Russia ideology creeping in. What next ... a ban on aggressive scents? Loud clothing?
Whilst we’re at let’s ban passengers to stop overcrowding on trains 🤪 melbourne
Yup, ban dicks who chew their food like a camel in my ear. And while you’re at it, ban the dicks talking loudly on their phones because they think we’re actually interested in their lives. You’ll find they’re usually the same person.
Bottled water however should continue to be allowed on trains, especially in warm to hot days when trains can be cramped with people during peak periods
If they want to bonk, rent a room, if they want to eat drink on public transport, go to Maccas.
Try in Singapore and you could be arrested !
So if it’s a stinking hot day and we’re on public transport, we’re not allowed to drink water...you have got to be joking me
Whilst it feel like the Nanny State we live in, there’s something so vile about being forced to sit on a crowded train at 8 am watching a lady eat a whole roasted chicken tearing it apart with her hands, that makes me not feel well enough to turn up for my day at work
So many people get on the train at Flinders St in the evening peak with Lord of the fries. Does tend to stink out the carriage a bit.
Hasn’t it always been some crime or another to consume food and drink on public transport unless you were in an interstate bus or train
Can we also ban people with shocking BO too please? This would free up a lot of carriage space.
The nannystaters enemiesofpleisure and the funpolice are at it again. It’s not like people are having bbq’s in our transport service. What else are we going to ban? It’s ok to have ice injecting rooms next to a primary school but NO to a sandwich on the train farrrkrightoff
I'd rather sit through a food fight than give ticket inspectors another excuse to intimidate public transport customers.
Enjoy more people fainting and holding up trains then
Agree. It’s a train. Not a food court!
When you can ban banal phone calls you can ban food
Not everyone has the common sense to not eat on public transport. It seems ok until you end up sitting next to someone else eating their curry noisily or get covered in softdrink/juice because a sudden bump/stop moves the contianer uncontrollably.
So they should. I think Qld has had that ban for years.
Nanny state?
How about fk off..
We should allow more bicycles on trains. After all, what is the point of a bicycle if you have to ride it when you could take up space on busy trains?
Tuna is worse
I think drinking water should be allowed
Nothing smells worse than another person's dimsim. Nothing. Not a fan of apple crunching either just quietly..
