But he said the Government's current scheme was "too restricted" as it only applied to accommodation provides under strict circumstances. "The last few months have been a real rollercoaster — we saw the numbers come up during the quieter months of COVID, then we had the lockdown, which crippled us," he said.

Mr Marshall said South Australia's tourism sector was having a "summer to remember" with some accommodation providers in the city and regional SA breaking pre-coronavirus occupancy rates following the second round of vouchers. In Adelaide, the figures revealed that hotel occupancy on New Year's Eve reached 82 per cent — the highest since the pandemic began.Premier Steven Marshall said the latest data proved the Government's support of the sector was working.

Data for January 8 this year showed hotel occupancy at 75 per cent, up from 73 per cent for the same time last year.South Australian Tourism Commission chief executive Rodney Harrex said tourism operators were "incredibly resilient having faced bushfires, drought and a global pandemic".
