It’s not panic stations yet for South Sydney – but it soon could be

Yes, they haven’t been great in the first two weeks of the season. But let’s put things in perspective: they were beaten by the Sea Eagles in Las Vegas and led that match for a long time, and look at what Manly did to the Roosters last week.

I was very surprised by the decision to drop halfback Lachlan Ilias. It doesn’t matter who you are as a young halfback, if your forwards are not doing the job, then it’s going to be hard to create opportunities. I haven’t seen a lot of Smith in the halves as he takes over from Keary , but he’s got a huge challenge on Friday night.

With a relatively young and inexperienced bench, I’ve noticed a big difference in how they play when Fisher-Harris and Moses Leota are off the field. They look like they’re really missing Spencer Leniu at the moment. Fisher-Harris’ absence on Thursday night is going to put a lot more pressure on Leota.

The key for the Broncos is stopping the Panthers’ back five and their dummy-half running. None of them are imposing from a physical point of view, but they get so much out of them. They’re built low to the ground and are powerful, and once they get on a roll it’s almost impossible to curtail Nathan Cleary.

I can’t wait for the battle between Liam Martin and Brendan Piakura on the edge. Piakura is a superstar in the making and you know what you get with Martin. I reckon he sent Kelma Tuilagi’s shoulder flying into the leagues club with that hit last week.Other than the Tina Turner era, I don’t think the game has been in a better spot than right now. The quality over the first two rounds of the season has been sensational.
