As Omicron spreads around the country, thousands of business like Adam Ellston's are being affected while some public health experts suggest more restrictions are necessary.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison has said the government's strategy for dealing with the Omicron variant was to protect hospitals, while keeping the economy functioning.

"Omicron is a gear-change and we have to push through," Prime Minister Scott Morrison said last week.Mr Ellston's business is also pushing through, but the rate at which Omicron is spreading through the community is making it hard. One of his sub-contractors was off work while infected, and his next project has been delayed because someone in the excavator's family came down with COVID-19.He said when one job blew out, he risked missing out on the next job he had lined up

"Builders won't wait, no one's going to wait for you — they'll ring around and then get someone else to do it," he said.In a statement this week, the Public Health Association of Australia said easing restrictions with the intention of "opening up the economy" had had the opposite effect. He would like to see state and federal authorities returning to a policy of slowing the spread of the virus — a strategy that became widely known as flattening the curve.

Business owners (those w/out epidemiology degrees) who were screaming “Open up!” - misinformed by MurdochGutterMedia Herald Sun, egged on by 7NewsAustralia 9NewsAUS theage who rejoiced Domicron’s Scomicron’s LetItRip unleashed on NSW & infecting VIC etc. are now surprised?

🤭🤣🤭 What's their next bright idea? Lockdown?

Well the economy ie business wanted to open up and here we are. Shut up bleating about it. Suck it up. You wanted it Morrison and Perrottet gave it to you. People are sick and can't get tested. Health system under the pump. Blame where it belongs.

So many business owners were protesting the lockdowns and border closures. The entire sector is to blame for their own mess.

Businesses demanded we reopen now they don’t like the consequences 🤔 COVID19

I’m living on reduced income, clients preferring less support to stay safe. Enough for me to get by, but no extra, if something comes up I’m fooked. Lockdown took any spare cash.

Only it's really not like a lockdown.

Lock Down or HIV

Oh , well get HIV then ...

Almost 3 weeks now I have had to close my business. Never had to close in the past 2 years. Gov found a good work around ... but at the highest cost to us all.

Who could have seen this coming? Oh, anyone reading international news reports

Thanks Domicron

They were screaming to not have density limits, masks and isolation for close contacts. Be careful what you wish for.

You wanted it. You got it. These whiners are like teenagers who think their parent’s advice is designed to restrict their fun.

People learned now from previous lockdowns, businesses should too. Let’s go back to the old sayings “HEALTH IS WEALTH”.

Honestly, ABC, surely you’ve exhausted all the business owners by now? This isn’t news. It’s a pandemic, we’re all having to make changes to manage. Relentless negative moaning; if there’s a mental health issue emerging, you’ve certainly contributed with this sort of narrative.

Of all the demographics weathering this crisis, that is the one I least care about

This was explained to them repeatedly but they wouldn’t listen.

Do some actually reporting!!!!!!!! This is the easiest story to A/B we were locked down. There was opinion and and backlash. Now we are out of lockdown and the same thing. If you don’t even mention this in a story. You have 0 credibility

Can we stop listening to small business owners. It was very clear a year ago that are are the stupidest most selfish people in society. They aren’t happy with lockdowns. We open up and they still are having a right whinge. Someone put that Shannon Noel track on.

at least with lockdowns, essential workers and services get some degree of protection. Now we get to look for a guaranteed repeat outbreak every 3-4 months - severity will depend on variants and how many ppl were exposed to the last variant. almost completely avoidable.

The abc fed us a daily dose of small business owners whinging about Covid lockdowns and demanding we open up. They got what they wanted.

truth will always out

Business was crying out for the Economy to be opened up. We saw them in tears during lockdown, blaming Dan although they had jobkeeper to keep them going. Now we have opened up they are in tears because they have no staff or ppl are staying away. lockoutorlockdown

It's just like a lockdown, except without the government supports 👍 CallTheElectionDickhead

Did they really think things would get back to 'normal' with 'let it rip'?

What did they expect?

Went out for brunch and flat out finding a seat

Colour me SURPRISED🙄🙄🙄

Unlike other purpose driven lockdowns that were effective on each occasion. We are now largely in a self imposed lockdown with no end in sight? All thanks to the letitrip attitude & callous incompetence by morrison & perrottet!

50% of your clientele were possibly foreign students.

people scaring omicron, Domicron not.

Hmmn, so letting it rip, and ignoring experts wasn't a great idea. Who'd have thought that?

So yesterday you pillory WA for not having its health system ready and today you acknowledge that in a pandemic you protect health system which will be and are under pressure. Can't have it both ways

Dear , you are part of the problem.

Well done journos and live with it

Blame leighsales, it’s what her irresponsible “journalism” wanted. Her only goal is to push the Murdoch agenda and damage Australia

all going according to plan

Haemorraging from a self-inflicted wound.

Standard LNP Darwinism (but they make sure they will be ok first).

'haemorrhaging' has another H. subeditorsneeded

Stop this reporting who cares they wanted everything to be opened well this is what happens tell some real life stories from the families that have lost their loved ones to this Morrison virus

yeah wishing on the cursed monkey paw never turns out how you want

They screamed for this for two years they have what they want but they don't like the consequences

What lockdown?

Sick of ScottyFromMarketing and his dumb slogans. This pandemic is testing the limits of government. The LNP is great at creating problems that don't exist but can't deal with a real crisis.

DeanWinterMP

Business owners don't like the 'personal responsibility' approach?Take it up with the LNP. This was their plan. Fuck em. They can go out of business if the want to prioritise money over health..

You wanted to open up and complained about lockdowns and no business. Well this is what opening up does. And there are people who want this for WA. No chance. Not if we can help it.

Everyone saw this coming a mile away. The government put the response in our hands, said take personal responsibility, so we are. No one wants to add pressure to the health system. If we had access to free RATs then we might have confidence, but alas, we are flying blind.

Can someone explain to me like I’m 5? What is it that they want? Lockdown, bad. No lockdowns, bad too. It’s a pandemic. Let it rip and all of that.

I get they are doing it tough, but first it was throw the boarders open we need the people back and out, so we did but it’s all gone to shit because we dont have enough RAT, vaccine, people to administer

The fact is sales is prob just like now before covid 2 years ago. There was a short period of sales boom for small business after lockdown because people are desperate for hanging out, haircuts, etc etc.

ABC news pushed Morrison’s let it rip, good little lap dogs

This is so frustrating! THEY WERE WARNED! So many times, health experts said this would happen, this is what we were avoiding by keeping the spread low. So many powerful business voices lobbied to open up anyway. So here we are!

Wow how could that have happened? Muppets!!

I suggest small business votes for Labor. You vote LNP and whinge about their policies. Thought the penny would have dropped by now. LNP are not better managers of anything, despite what Murdoch wants you to think. If this mess we’re in hasn’t shown you that, you are beyond help.

I think it might have something to do with there being a global pandemic?

I hope we as a society are learning from this: 1. Public health is paramount. 2. Trickle down economics is not healthy 3. Capitalism doesn't fix anything 4. An economy that relies on people buying stuff is destined for trouble 5. Self sufficiency is better than global trade.

changing close contact rules so workers dont have to stay home when other workers get it. But then other workers already infected have spread it before getting tested till the workplace has to close down. This system doesnt work well

You can't force people who don't want to risk getting sick to go out and spend money 😒

Scott’s narrative of 'You have two choices here: you can push through or you can lock down. We're for pushing through” is BS. There are many more options and he knows it. Politics above public health. People will make their own choices to keep safe if he won’t. Simple as that.

To be fair whilst all of the 'open up earlier' traders and politicians were screaming we did tell them that people won't voluntarily come out if they feel unsafe. That many people exercise self protection should not be surprising.

Yeah. Who would have thunk it. People look after their health and their families health when the government clearly doesn’t give a crap. People unwilling to sacrifice themselves and kids for the ‘economy’.

Health First and Stay Safe.

Sorry that we don’t want to risk death and disability for bottom lines

I'm one of the small businesses that followed the guidelines, if we locked down we locked down. Pretty much belly up now but can accept it is what it is so studying to do something else instead.

Imagine people not wanting to get sick ........

I’m calling it a Clayton’s Lockdown.

There are many resisting the desire to say 'I Told You So' while furious at the stupidity of those who think it's ok for people to die unnecessarily. Remember Morrison wanted this even before vaccines or have people forgotten his urging to 'get on the bus' Thank You Premiers

Why must ABC persist with this constant complaining. It's not like businesses weren't whinging for this exact situation for the past 2 years, even with government support 🙄

Well, I can see that Victoria opened up too soon due to small businesses regularly complaining on the ABC and Liberal MPs whinging on the ABC and protesting in the streets and Feds blame shifting to Labor on ABC, so Andrews gives them all what they demanded and they still whinge

How can the government expect people to go out when is not safe, when we have increasing numbers of people sick or dead.

Business & Morrison demanded the opening up as part of their can do capitalism. The situation now is a direct response of Morrison & Hunt not doing their job last October when all the experts advertised them of what let it rip would do. This is their incompetence at work

Clayton’s Lockdown

Well at least you don’t have a war coming in a sight! Europe is gone a mad place to even follow Covid restrictions, war and thanks driving through EU to get to Ukraine! theworldhasfallen

Meanwhile in WA businesses are booming but media still wants us to open up to the plague.

They screamed blue murder to open up and they got exactly what they wanted. If they don't like it now, too bad.

They whinge through lock downs now they whinge when we open up.... this is what they wanted

Can they let the Commonwealth know that the bailing out of big business isn't what they want?

It is what they asked for open up.. be careful what u ask for

Heard a lady on the radio saying her business was very busy, it was a funeral director.

What's the problem. Just use that JobKeeper you didn't require in 2020. Oh, you spent it on a new Jetski?

not to worry Josh has got $16bils to splash b4 election where they'd get big chunks Nothing would be too much for porkies

If the 700 dead people want headlines they should start small businesses.

“see the reintroduction of measures such as limiting the number of people in public venues” ✔️there are density limits “limiting the number of people who can visit private homes” ✔️You can do this yourself, don’t need Govt to tell you “and mask mandates” ✔️There are for Indoors

Mission going as planned by governments in line with big companies who all throughout this pandemic are the only ones doing well.

A pity JoshFrydenberg squandered $40 billion due to the original, poorly planned JobKeeper program. It would have come in handy for situations like this.

Who's sorry now? Sick of businesses bitching that what they relentlessly campaigned for - opening up, no restrictions - is a disaster. Well, duh ... I could see it coming! Stop platforming them.

We have no choice to stop Morrison government to perform LetItRip and Livingwithcovid strategy. To be able to protect our loved one, we are self-imposed lockdown to keep our child and elderly with underlying medical condition safe. Then votehimOUT on Federal Election day.

Need a country wide lockdown where financial support can be given to businesses. Because the streets are empty right now. Lock it down for a month and give support to the people who desperately need it while this virus is spreading like wildfire.

Might be time to accept that this government know nothing about economics

I wonder how many of them are the small business owners that couldn't stop complaining about lockdowns.

Funny how I stated this was worse than a lockdown and was laughed at!

Be careful what you wish for .. LetItRip

The cost of all these mandates will be far greater than the threat of any COVID variant.

Why not show the actual economic data ABC? This is all just anecdotal bullshit.

Where I live is heaving. Life is normal. Businesses are busy and we can see friends as much as we want.

Sadly businesses wanted everything open all boarders and now we have them open more are closed than we’re before the boarders were open. It just goes to show be careful what you wish for.

If only we had government in our lives governing. CallTheElectionDickhead

Whinging business owners during lockdowns & now they're not happy that we are open ongoing focus on this ? Aged care neglect concerns me more Unprotected children & teachers walking into an Omicron wave next week concerns me more as does disabled not receiving boosters

You can see why the feds were pushing for no lockdowns, it was all about the $. The State Premiers that were concerned about Health were a daily headline, and yet we are still hearing the small business stories, deaths are constantly overlooked.

And entirely predictable. The idea a successful economy and “letting it rip” are mutually compatible is an utter fools gold. Place your blame squarely at the feet of Dom_Perrottet and ScottMorrisonMP.

Regular people tried to warn them. We didn’t want to open up and let it rip.

would these be the same people, along with their industry spokespeople who were screaming from the roof tops to open up, remove the restrictions and let it rip? well then, well done! play dumb games, win stupid prizes

So all those people you have a platform to, to whinge and undermine lockdown measures are now unhappy that we're open? Sounds about fvcking right

Here in SA things were going fine. Then let it in. Every business is empty now, I really feel sorry for them. No support OR FOR CARERS EITHER.

Can Australians stop being so scared of this virus? It’s embarrassing. All the ppl here being self righteous & lapping up the COVID drama cause it’s fun. You want our children to pay the debt from all these free hand outs from the Gov. We need to keep moving through this please.

Is that universal across Australia….or just in certain city locations

‘Haemorrhoiding’

At least during the lockdowns they had financial support. Now it's let's live with the virus, which is what most of them wanted they are in financial trouble. So what do they want?

Thanks ABC for showing all the hairdressers, publicans & small business operators screaming to open up the country Journalists and media not completely responsible but have created an environment where let it rip happened.. people are dying Well done ItaButtrose AusPol2022

They got what they wanted. Still unhappy?

It’s far worse than a lockdown. During a lockdown the state and federal governments actively supported people to isolate themselves. The economy is in free fall with nobody at the helm.

Be careful what you wish for...

My heart goes out to Small Business owners that will loose everything because the State Government did not want to have long term plan with adaptive controls for businesses to survive the pandemic.

This is true. Gov should consider some subsidies for them. Some people are really scared of the virus and reduce social activities. I haven’t gone to restaurant for nearly a year. RBA should be cautious when thinking of raising interest rate also.

The same small businesses that were haemorrhaging during lockdown and the media outlets could not get enough of their stories whilst I feel incredibly sorry for them a lot of these people were scathing of the state leaders who kept covid out demanding to let it rip nek minut …

it’s almost as of small biz is never happy. because they’ve no ideas. and need the govt carefully pampering their asses. pandemic or no pandemic.

lEt It RiP!!
