When the Education Minister introduced new university fees last year he promised ‘no existing student will be worse off.’ Now, students who alter their degrees are getting an expensive shock | natassiazc LisaVisentin

University students seeking to tweak their degree path or drop one of their courses are being stung with higher fees, despite the federal government’s assurance that no existing students would be worse off under its new scheme.

That revelation has sparked concern among students who were not aware they could be financially penalised for changes to their existing courses. “For students like myself – changing their second degree from an arts to science based faculty – it’s counter-intuitive, since this bill was encouraging students to move towards STEM.”

Overall, that student could pay as much as $2000 more each year for the new double degree, or a 22 per cent increase, based on course mix of half law and half science each semester. Mr Gerrard has written to federal Education Minister Alan Tudge, arguing for an amendment to stop existing students like him being negatively impacted by the changes.

natassiazc LisaVisentin I am lucky to have started studying law and commerce last year before the price rise. But I am also smart to realise that nothing is ever for free and someone always has to pay.

natassiazc LisaVisentin Gee. It’s not like the former Minister would tell a fib, or anything like that? Surely not.

natassiazc LisaVisentin Why are the LNP so against free or affordable education? Are they dead against class migration and all for keeping the poor, poor?

natassiazc LisaVisentin And now nasty, whingey Dan Tehan has moved on to a different portfolio. What sneaky, snot-rags they are screwing Australian students❗️Unforgivable what they did to the Class of 2020 who wanted to pursue humanities.

natassiazc LisaVisentin Do you know that a law degree is now a “generalist degree” and that if you pay $115,000 for a law degree at Melb uni and finish with a WAM (GPA) of less than 70, you are unlikely to find a job as a lawyer? So, basically, there is a HUGE oversupply of law grads.

natassiazc LisaVisentin “The cost of science, maths, nursing and teaching degrees have been slashed.” This is because the Liberals want to entice people into these disciplines. They don’t want people to study humanities so they put the price up. They obviously don’t rate these disciples as important!

natassiazc LisaVisentin Gough Whitlam gave me a free uni degree. He was a Prime Minister who knew the importance of education. I thank him for that as it would not have happened otherwise.

Home builders nervous about $25,000 hit as government deadline loomsNervous home builders are urging the federal government to tweak rules around its HomeBuilder scheme and spare them a $25,000 hit to their finances as time runs out. Given the atrocious service levels of the major lenders I’m not surprised. Up to 5 months to approve loans. Good riddance. Stupid scheme that wasn’t required and increased the price of builds for everyone. 'The extra $25,000 gave us the opportunity to build a bigger home than we were looking at,'......So these people are distressed because they aren't able to build a bigger home with tax payer's money?
