Lily has a pretty good idea of how the able-bodied world can view people who use wheelchairs. She doesn't want your sympathy for what she's gone through, or to be an inspiration. She wants you to think about how you see disability.

The social model sees disability as constructed by "the interaction between people living with impairments and an environment filled with physical, attitudinal, communication and social barriers", PWDA says.

But the effects of the medical model of disability are still being felt across every level of society. She admits it was a lengthy process: "It wasn't an overnight realisation — it took me a long time to understand."

My son (10) uses a wheel chair and mobility scooter for duchenne muscular dystrophy. Trips to shops, parks and still at school always come with stares. It’s mostly curiosity. We usually just stare back and they smile sheepishly and look away :)
