'It's a big thing, a lot of the people are becoming emotional with joy.'

Tourism to Uluru has boomed by 20 per cent in the past year as visitors flock to central Australia ahead of an imminent ban on climbing the internationally-recognisable rock.

"The traditional owners were suffering and ended up in stress because they were treading on important place, important rock."AAP "What we are seeing is an increase in the caravan sector. Lake Eyre filled with water this year as well - so many, many more are going up the centre. Everyone was saying 'ah it's going to be a disaster when the climb closes', but that's not going to happen.

Since the national park board voted to ban the climb, Uluru has received increased media attention and more visitors - with 395,338 people entering the park in the 2018-19 fiscal year, a 20 per cent increase on the previous year. "There has been a spike in the number of patient evacuations from Ayers Rock Airport over the past 100 days [since 1 July] when compared to the corresponding period last year."

"You're still going to get people who climb illegally. I was last there last July and I told my daughters we will be back there in 20 years to climb it again. In the overall context of a trip out to Uluru, a $600 fine can just be added on to what is already a very expensive trip."

imagine the hue and cry if I went and climbed a shinto shrine or a buddhist temple. Keep the rock and ban the bloody tourists!

KellyAlspals I don’t see why Uluru can’t be a culturally significant place for white Australians also

FakeNews

Let’s ban a piece of Aussie culture ,but not ban halal ritual slaughter, makes complete sense .

It is racist to allow one race to dictate what to do with a natural treasure that ALL Australians should enjoy - not just people with black skin.

Stupid. This is not a cultural move but a power move. Everyone came out of Africa. Aborigines deserve respect but in reality we treat them on the one hand as 3rd rate Australians & then on the other as having beliefs & customs that must be unquestioningly & totally respected.

And no one who is not white can go to the Opera House or climb or even cross the Harbour Bridge - and only men!! Oh the Snowy Mountains Scheme out of bounds too - ethnically diverse white male Europeans but no women. Secret European male's business. The Rock will wear out

Don't climb it people. Respect

Views remain mixed as Uluru climb closure approaches | Sky News AustraliaAs the Uluru climb’s Oct. 26 closure approaches, people are flooding to Alice Springs hoping for one last chance to climb the rock. \n\nWhile many are eager to climb, others are ambivalent or opposed to the idea. \n\nCentral Land Council CEO Joe Martin-Jard told Sky News cultural and spiritual concerns are not the only reason the climb needs to close. \n\n“It’s also for safety reasons,” Mr Martin-Hard said. “They’ve had to take down bodies off the rock, people have fallen off the rock. It really hurts them to see visitors being hurt”. \n\nHe added the owners of Uluru are “a bit disappointed” to see people going to the bathroom while climbing on the rock. \n\nMeanwhile, Alice Springs resident David Hewitt said in his ten years working in communities surrounding Uluru in the 1960s and 1970s, Indigenous people “never expressed any concern about climbing the rock”. \n\nImage: Getty Closing it down does a great disservice for our country and its economy! Hurts our tourist flow badly! Ridiculous to close it. It's just a rock. Uxit
