Police Minister Yasmin Catley does not believe a royal commission into how drugs are being smuggled into Australia and causing underworld groups to kill one another on Sydney's streets is warranted, as she issued a warning to criminals causing bloodshed.

Five people have been shot over five days in Sydney's troubled south-west in what detectives suspect to be targeted attacks linked to the underworld.

It has prompted the NSW Opposition to call for a royal commission into how drugs are being smuggled into the country and leading to turf wars between criminal groups. Ms Catley then called out shadow police minister Paul Toole who told Jayes one day earlier that criminals were"running rampant" due to the Labor government being"soft".

NSW Police announced on Thursday it has established a specialist taskforce to investigate the spate of shootings, with three people dead and five injured since June 27. "Just a couple of years ago we saw a spike in drug related crime and the NSW Police deployed the exact same tactic, and we know that at that time it was completely successful and those people who were put behind bars are still there today," she said.
