Israel imposed a second nationwide lockdown on Friday to tackle one of the world's highest coronavirus infection rates, despite public protests over the new blow to the economy.

"We do not close a country this way," ran a headline in the top-selling daily Yediot Aharonot on Friday, which featured interviews with doctors, economists and teachers all opposed to the lockdown.

There are numerous exceptions to the new distance rule, including people going out to buy medicine or food, as well as to attend a funeral or circumcision ceremony.Bars were packed in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem on Thursday evening, despite Israel having the world's second-highest infection rate based on an AFP tally of the past two weeks.

But within days of it going into effect on August 21 authorities gave up on enforcing it, in the face of overwhelming public opposition in a country in the grips of economic crisis and still reeling from its worst-ever peacetime disaster. The government has branded numerous cities"red" for their high infection rates, including Netanya and Rishon Letzion, near Tel Aviv, and various neighbourhoods of Jerusalem, including the Old City.

Unemployment rate falls as 111,000 jobs added in August, despite Melbourne lockdownAustralia's unemployment rate posts a surprise fall to 6.8 per cent, as 111,000 jobs were created last month despite a lockdown in the nation's second most populous state. No explanation as to if these are 'new jobs' or just people going off jobkeeper/seeker and back to their old jobs considering that before Covid-19 a good month for new jobs was 30-40,000 mostly part time and casual positions. Can't help feeling there is some dodgy accounting here Hmm, the figures do not tell the whole story. The ABS only counts people actively looking for work and in the current job situation there are 100s of thousands not bothering. I’m calling major BS. This cannot be true. Someone at abc really needs to pull this apart & do a full analysis/ breakdown. Fake news. I want names of companies, sources, salary figures. You realise recruiters create fake job profiles in job search yeah? 🤨🤨🤨

'I think it would be completely wrong for this country and we are going to do everything in our power to prevent it.' you wouldn’t trust the UK govt to get you a coffee Who cares about Britain? And even health care workers in England can't access covid19 testing. People are told to travel hundreds of kilometres to the nearest testing centre. Very sad.
