More than two drinks a week is risky, and no amount of alcohol is safe, a major Canadian study concludes.

Three to six drinks a week increases the risk of developing certain cancers, like colorectal and breast cancer, while more than seven drinks a week also increases your risk of heart disease and stroke."Once you get into the seven plus range, then you are at an increasingly high level of risk," he said.

The report cited the most recent available data that shows the use of alcohol causes nearly 7,000 cancer deaths each year in Canada, with most cases being breast or colon cancer, followed by cancers of the rectum, mouth and throat, liver, oesophagus and larynx. The calls received immediate pushback from parts of the Canadian alcohol industry, which argued they were already informing consumers of the risks associated with alcohol., with the Cancer Council saying it would be a powerful way of raising awareness.

Unsurprisingly, the alcohol industry in Australia has opposed any cancer warning labels, saying there is "no scientific justification" for them.Australia's guidelines were revised in 2020, and say to reduce the risk of harm from alcohol-related disease or injury, healthy men and women should drink no more than 10 standard drinks a week and no more than 4 standard drinks on any one day.

Canada is cucked

Bullshit

LOL! I've had hangovers 10 times worse than COVID.

There is no safe amount of alcohol. But I suggest a drink now and then is good for relaxation and reflection - preferably in a social setting. Psychologically alcohol can provide a positive nudge.

ABCscience If I had my time again, I would never have started drinking alcohol.

Mine is zero. That's the only safe alcohol intake level for me. Of course, it took until my late thirties to realize that.....

Yep, alcohol is a group 1 carcinogen, is an addictive, psychoactive drug, and kills 1000's of Australians each year. Up there with smoking. Yet we still let companies market alcohol in public, on TV, in view of our kids... needs to change. Public awareness needs to grow.

probably true unironically...

You don't know me, Canada!

Oof

I wouldn't trust anything coming out of Canada. They have strayed down the 'woke' authoritarian path far too deep to make any meaningful contributions to the world.

Yep let's just stay home

You take a risk crossing a road, driving a car & going into Melbourne city too.. let’s ban everything 😂

Canada is a fascist 🤡 🌎.

Who cares

within 2km of my last house there were 2 separate grave markers for children killed by or because of drunk drivers a 14 yr old girl and a toddler makes me think any is too much is it really worth it?

I'll drink to that.

Same for smoking and speed. No safe limits.

Two glasses per week: new Canada alcohol guidelines prompt fierce debateGuidelines funded by Health Canada represent drastic shift from previous recommendations issued in 2011 Less of a thing that's bad for you, is better for you. Divisive? I enjoy the 'pleasure + stress relief + collegiality associated with alcohol' too, but many get those things without booze. Many get them from smoking, too, but we tell them a healthy amount to smoke is not at all.
