Iran 's Revolutionary Guard will be on high alert after the president's death, even as the supreme leader calls for calm Iran 's notorious security enforcement machine — led by the Revolutionary Guard — will be on high alert across the country following the deaths of President Ebrahim Raisi and Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian.

While the president is a senior figure, in Iran the supreme leader is exactly what the name says. In a television address, Khamenei stressed that whatever the outcome of the accident "the people of Iran must not be anxious or worried".) In Iran, presidents come and go — the real source of power is the supreme leader. It says much about the country that since the "Islamic revolution" of 1979 there have been only two of them, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini and now Ayatollah Khamenei.

Every so often Iran faces an uprising. The one in 2009 was dramatic and brutal and after several weeks was put down., a 22-year-old woman who had been taken into custody by the "morality police" allegedly for not sufficiently covering her hair. Amini died while in custody — the Iranian authorities say she died of a medical episode and not because of any ill-treatment — which sparked demonstrations around the country.

Younger people look at places such as the UK, the US and Australia and yearn for freedom of association, identity, movement and opportunities. In Iran, rarely does anyone hold a senior role if not trusted and liked by the supreme leader and advisers.
