He is known as a kill buyer, although he prefers the term horse trader. He buys horses no one wants and trucks them to a place no horse wants to end up - the Meramist abattoir featured in last week’sPeter Loffel has traded in camels and cattle, but he also buys horses to send to the abattoir. The Sydney Morning Herald
Loffel, 62, lives in Mooroopna, a canning town near Shepparton, where he has quietly gone about his grim business for more than 30 years. The kill buying business is not complicated. Loffel buys some horses from auctions, but most of them he picks up cheaply from trainers and breeders. This is the question that racing has been publicly grappling with since last Thursday, when the ABC broadcast footage taken inside the Meramist abattoir by animal rights activists showing ex-racehorses and harness racers being cruelly treated and inexpertly killed.ABC
Melbchief There must be a limit on the number of horses bred at studs to vastly reduce the number of horses ultimately unwanted. Fixed!

Melbchief Some people get it, some don’t. I don’t think the problem is the fact that the horses get slaughtered, which we know happens (personally don’t agree with it btw), it’s about humane treatment and transparency which this industry don’t care about. It’s all about the money. 😡
Melbchief Just exactly what have people been thinking. the point is they haven't. If this wasn't happening there would be horses on your front lawns. Take your children to the zoo and show them the bigs cats licking their lips after munching on a nice horse thigh bone. Get real!
Melbchief Confirms what I believe and everyone else knows. Please no more faux indignant cries from the racing industry. Send in the receivers to reform racing.
Melbchief Karma will come... it will creep up and you will say , “ Why ME” 😢
Melbchief Deceitful dirty industry - and now all the rats are running for cover!
Melbchief Racing industry full of liars, run by greed and knows exactly what happens to these horses. What a corrupt and dirty organisation...
Melbchief There are more horses than there are people that want them. Oops.
Melbchief The racing industry are liars. They are only motivated by greed.
Melbchief The racing industry is a deceitful collection of corrupt liars....no surprise.
Melbchief It was the way the poor buggers were slaughtered. Five bolts to the head because the first one wasn't done properly and being kicked while dying a painful death is not reasonable
Melbchief So barryofarrell what do you have to say about this?
Melbchief at the end of the day horse meat is used in countless food products we likely just don’t know/care about. This has become a moral issue over a practical one. Why isn’t it regulated better?
