NRL CEO Andrew Abdo has described international rugby league as an ‘X-factor’ for the code and believes it will build momentum with a dedicated window at the end of the season.

The first international fixtures involving NRL stars in almost three years were played last weekend and whet the appetite of players and fans for the end-of-season World Cup and more regular Tests.

“We are working through the season structure for next year. It is a new cycle and there are some changes that are linked to the new broadcast arrangements with our partners, but I will say this - the [ARL] Commission are 100 per cent committed to international football,” Abdo said. “Instead of having just a single round we can start to think about tours, we can start to think about tournaments, and we can start to think about regular content every year, instead of just doing a one off. That is incredibly exciting.

Don't cancel the rep round you fools!

It is a bit of spin. He is promising things the sport has always had. If they take away the mid season test they need to compensate by adding more games at the end of the season than we already have. Minimum 3, not just for Aust NZ Eng. All the top sides Samoa, Tonga, Fiji, Fra

Welcome to the party DinosaurLeague

Strategically the NRL need to realise it’s a USP and a product that the AFL doesn’t have. Essential to build on it.

No mention of Dutton visit, or a joint announcement plus a complete dismissal of a world board and the RFL. NRL now in complete control of global RL

The statement says players will not have to choose, but looks at Katoni Staggs, will wait to see if picked for Origin 2 before commiting to international call. Its not a choice, its whether choose or not

So who and when do Australia play next? Surely we aren’t waiting until the WC?

IntRL We had that for 100 years and you lot nixed it. But still, you can have end of season block AND a mid-season test, it’s not an either/or.

Wrong.

I disagree. The general public’s interest in League starts to wain straight after the Grand Final. Focus turns to cricket etc after that. Very few people are interested in internationals games at that point.

Finally, the penny has dropped on Abdo & V'landys head, internationals, in particular the Pacific Rim Nations, should be supported. Wow, most sane people figured that out years ago...but small mercy's for small minds I suppose

Theres always been end of season internationals. Its great we’re trying to (again) build them up but rep round added another layer to the game during the time of the year that the nrl struggles. So the NZRL_Kiwis just sit back & watch Australian states play. So short sighted

Just a word salad to disguise the true nature of why he wants a dedicated end of season window; because the broadcasters do. IRL is not a priority unfortunately, even though in the mid to long term it will result in far more holistic growth (viewership/revenue/etc.,)

Absolute moron. Not like players need a holiday or anything. Have a dedicated round during Origin period when the players are in shape and match fit. Not when they are looking forward to relaxing for a couple of weeks.
