Inside the new $1.5 billion Footscray Hospital

A combined 1500 workers were onsite during peak construction for the hospital. Last year, the hospital was also had 10 tower cranes, the highest number of cranes on an individual site in Australia.

But the latest project to transform the western suburbs is not a high-rise apartment block but Victoria’s biggest ever hospital, which will open in 2025.One of the state’s largest ever investments in health infrastructure, the $1.5 billion Footscray Hospital will include a new emergency department as part of the 10-storey inpatient unit on Geelong Road, equipped with 500 beds and a garden at the end of each wing.

The tapestry has been designed by two First Nations artists from Melbourne’s west, Maree Clarke and Mitch Mahoney, and is inspired by native flora and fauna along the nearby Maribyrnong River. For the 5000 staff working onsite, there will be a childcare centre and gymnasium. The rest of the sprawling precinct will include general practice facilities, community health facilities, retail and office spaces.
