While most Cape York communities remove their checkpoints today in line with the Queensland's easing restrictions, several communities will delay their reopening.

Fifteen Indigenous communities across Queensland will have coronavirus restrictions lifted from today.Restrictions will be reinstated if the state records new COVID-19 casesSpecial restrictions, including checkpoints and community lockdowns, were enforced in March as part of a health directive under federal biosecurity legislation.

Cherbourg Aboriginal Shire Mayor, Elvie Sandow, said it had been a balancing act between keeping people safe and ensuring access to essential services. "We've still got to have in the back of our mind that if we get a case, we've still got to be prepared."Some communities opt to remain in lockdown Access to the tip of Cape York is also still restricted, with the Northern Peninsula Area Regional Council's continued lockdown.

The Western Cape York Community set up a roadblock preventing access to the community on March 22, four days before federal biosecurity laws were enforced on the wider Cape York region.
