The second wave of COVID-19 in India has engulfed rich and poor in a shuddering helplessness as their loved ones die for lack of oxygen or treatment | Amrit Dhillon

on Tuesday. After three hours she had still not been admitted. She died in the auto-rickshaw, with Vyas pummelling her chest to see if she was alive.

“Some of the doctors I spoke to told me to try Jaipur [300 kilometres away] in case I got lucky there. But I couldn’t face putting my dad’s frail body through such a long and tiring car ride. I got lucky and managed to wangle an oxygen concentrator to keep at home and stable,” Reddy said.. The country has reported more than 18.3 million confirmed cases of COVID-19 since the pandemic began last year. More than 204,000 people have died of it, according to the Johns Hopkins University tracker.

No one has been spared. Top journalist Barkha Dutt is a household name. On Tuesday, she lost her father to the disease. Dutt knows the who’s who of the entire country through her long journalistic career but she and her sister were reduced to begging for a bed. “Bring your own oxygen,” some hospitals told her.

Parking lots and scrub land next to the facilities are being used for the funeral pyres, massed row upon row – a macabre site that has frightened Indians and moved the world.Crematorium officials have never seen such horrific scenes. “The more space we create, the more the bodies keep coming in. We can’t keep up,” said one exhausted official.

A very sad and salutary message. We should also take out of it that even having your own large vaccine plant is not enough if you don’t have control over the vaccs ingredients and don’t use the production promptly ie 6 months ago.

The same story happened in 1918

Except a few of the rich are taking private planes and getting the hell out of dodge.

It’s like hearing of Spain and Italy last year.💔💔💔💔

ScoMo’s threat to jail returning AussiesThe Morrison government’s controversial India travel ban, which makes it illegal for Aussies to return, has been blasted as a step too far, with Labor accusing Scott Morrison of locking citizens out of the commonwealth. Absolutely farcical. Over 12 months to sort quarantine out and the solution is to ban and gaol Australian citizens. Be interesting to see if it's legal under Australia's human rights obligations. God must really hate Australians and obviously wants them to die in India if he is asking you to do this ScottMorrisonMP

India flight ban after quarantine infection spike not racist, PM saysPrime Minister Scott Morrison has denied his ban on flights from India is racist and claimed half of all recent returnees to Australia from COVID-ravaged India were infected with coronavirus. NZ also banned flights from India (& before AU did), but nothing on them being a racist country? Because Indian is NOT white... why AUS gov not ban UK flight and apply fine on returning when UK 's dead tot surge up last year... why why Yep he is racist for allowing this as he never allowed this law to happen when Europe, UK, USA was and is so high.
