Three independent councillors are running in the upcoming election in Brisbane, along with two independents in the lord mayoral race. One of the independent councillors, Richards, proudly notes being the only independent councillor elected in 70 years. However, she was disendorsed by her party due to allegations, which she denies.

Openly split down party lines , but there are three other independent councillors contesting the upcoming election: David Dallaston in McDowall, Nicole Johnston in Tennyson and Craig Moore in Wynnum-Manly. There are also two independents in the lord mayoral race: Bruce Tanti and Gilbert Holmes, neither particularly well-known. Richards, proudly noted on her official Tennyson ward page she was the only independent councillor to be elected to Brisbane City Council in 70 years.

They were both elected in 2016, when Sriranganathan won The Gabba ward and became Queensland’s first Greens councillor. But Richards was disendorsed by her party in December 2019, with the LNP’s top brass releasing a media statement announcing the referral of “extremely grave” claims to the Crime and Corruption Commission. Richards has always denied the allegations against her, and was cleared of wrongdoing by the CCC only a week before she lost her council seat to the LNP’s Greg Adermann at the March 2020 election
