The acting chair of ASIC tells Parliament the regulator acted with 'glacial' pace when dealing with its inquiry over $200,000 worth overpayments made to two chairmen.

Karen Chester, the acting chair of the Australian Securities and Investments Commission , says it took far too long for the corporate watchdog to respond to the knowledge it had overpaid its boss and deputy nearly $200,000.

Officials from the Australian National Audit Office are concerned the payments may have exceeded the limits set by the Remuneration Tribunal for both men's salaries. James Shipton was announced as the next ASIC chairman by then-financial services minister Kelly O'Dwyer on October 17, 2017.On Tuesday, Ms Chester told a Senate Estimates hearing ASIC officials had discovered the $187,000 in overpayments themselves during an internal audit and brought the matter to the attention of the ANAO last year.

Surely not on ScoMo and Josh’s watch. They keep telling us the Adults are in charge. Weak and corrupt LNP

ASIC was too slow to act on many of the issues that lead to and were addressed by the Hayne Royal Commission into banks and it seems they haven’t learnt the cultural lessons he dished out. It’s time for a serious overhaul at ASIC!

Deputy chair of ASIC resigns following expenses scandalThe deputy chair of Australia's corporate watchdog ASIC has resigned following an investigation into his expenses. That' just awful. I guess this would be the same ASIC (and APRA) that should have been regulating the finance industry, which resulted in a royal commission. I think we need to speed up the prosecution process and build more jails to accommodate the bludging parasites on our payroll.
