This is great news. A secret firefighting mission has saved the only natural grove of Wollemi pines. Watch and learn all about the incredible work of the specialist firefighters. More on the story here:

Heraldnorth-west of Sydney, specialist remote-area fire crews managed to ensure the so-called "dinosaur trees" survived."Wollemi National Park is the only place in the world where these trees are found in the wild and, with less than 200 left, we knew we needed to do everything we could to save them,” Mr Kean said.

A water-bombing helicopter releases its load in a bid to reduce the risk that the fire in the Wollemi National Park would affect the"'dinosaur" trees.and were once present across the whole of Australia. The Gospers Mountain fire burnt through more than 512,000 hectares including much of the Wollemi National Park, home to the"dinosaur trees".Ageing the current crop is difficult because they may be cloned from only a few trees or even a single individual.

"We just waited with bated breath," Mr Kean said, adding visibility remained very poor for days afterwards before experts could tell the outcome. While one population of a couple of trees was lost, the remaining 200 made it.Richard Kingsford, director of the Centre for Ecosystem Science at the University of NSW, said the preservation of the original stands of the pines was "fundamentally important".

Wow... taking proactive, preventative measures to protect against wildfires! Who knew? ForestManagement ProperForestry ClearTheDeadwood

I'm literally crying with happy and sad tears of physical releif..

Beautiful to see and so glad they are saved! Does anyone in power get that this is the tip of the iceberg for all of us? Don’t wait til it is too late to save life as we know it!

zalisteggall Wonderful news.

Amazing and heart warming

Finally a good story!

zalisteggall A shame scumo didn't ask for the big water bombers in time to save the entire National Park! And why only 4 when they offered 12? koalakiller

incredible and such a positive example of conservation and a preservation

ChrisKSim75 People lost homes and lives They diverted water bombers to save trees you can buy at the shop

Great news for the Wollemi.

My heart sank when I heard they were under threat...thankyou for preserving the oldest trees, if only trees carried wifi

Excellent 👏👏👏

That is wonderful.

👍🏼

Thank you

Good news in an unrelenting nightmare. These dinosaur trees are precious.

Yeh, great effort everyone involved

reardon_shaun Lucky there’s not a seam of coal under them. The crew that pulled this off deserves a medal btw.

How awesome is this

1.Billion animals dead 😭😢😭

Eoin this may be of interest to you. eoinlettice

They could have just sent one Tony Abbott.

Awesome

Because they’ve only survived how long?

When the fires first ignited, I posted on the RFS FB page asking if the trees were ok. A whole bunch of blokes made comments about how they wished they’d burn down because they wanted to be able to do this that or the other in the are. The trees are just problematic for them. 😡

Note the choice of music on this ad vs the Liberal ad a couple of weeks ago that looked almost identical.

mdavisqlder That's pretty cool 👏

Well done

And who do we owe our thanks for this wonderful work

I was quietly wondering about these ancient treasures as the fires raged in that area. So pleased to hear about this effort & that is was successful 🙌

That is fantastc! Some may not agree though. BUT e need to remember entire ecosystems were affected and these trees are so important

RohanLeppert Nice to see good news stories amongst the devastation

In a world largely devoid of good news.....this is fantastic

Ok, this is a feature film good to go

🌻👍🏻

I'm so glad these beautiful trees survived the fires. Thank you to everyone involved in protected them. 🌲

Excellent news! But it really is time to get facts right - Wollemia is NOT a pine, it's wrong to call it one. Calling it a pine is like calling a wallaby a sheep, they're that distantly related.

Great work ,

Two questions: Why was it a secret mission? And secondly, why don’t we plant more of them somewhere safer?

Good story this one, time to mass propagate these treasures

NickyWill100 How long will they stand the fire season as it becomes worsen year after year

An amazing story. Our flora and fauna are unique and valuable to the whole planet. Watching it burn was devastating and knowing we could’ve done more before the catastrophe is heartbreaking. We will never be the same country again. Let that sink in. AustralianWildFires auspol

Not hard to find now: only green patch, outlined with pink. They may have suvived the odd fire since Gondwanaland.

This is the best specimen of Wollemi Pine I’ve seen growing anywhere...in a private garden out of Milthorpe in the Central West of NSW

Great to see that with the correct resources the trees can be protected.

You’ve just reduced this horticulturist to tears of relief...Thankyou

This is great news , however if the same amount of effort had been put in early in the fire season, instead of going on holidays , the fires may have been contained and not been so devastating . ScottMorrisonMP AlboMP

OMG! I was so fearful for this stand of trees & no one was telling us anything about them. Thankyou for finally putting my mind at rest

Remarkable, but useless. Sooner or later they will die out. Plus nobody can see them, so who cares really.

sallymcmanus Nice to see. This isn't far from us. Interesting to know they are so close.

FatherBob This is good news although it does beg the question how they survived 200million years and CO2 levels nearly 3 times current levels. Must be fire adapted.

BrigidWD

FatherBob They survived 300million years

zalisteggall AidanCromarty you should be working for smh - seeing as you told me about this story a good 16 days ago.

Am very proud to be an Australian especially in these dark days.

Best day, ever! Also had the lovely Governor General of Australia, who actually works for the Queen, aka, Elizabeth, listen to my personal little story and opinion as well as my friend’s song Save Australia, which is funny and clever. Whooohooo!

Until next year, when they get burnt to shit

This is great news. I was wondering if the wollemipine had survived AustralianBushfires Would have been tragic if it didn’t. dinosaurplants

Great work. thank you.

Huge respect, and thanks to everyone who made this happen.

Best news I’ve heard all month!!!

A good news story. But a tragic one at the same time, showing what we are doing to our world.

Great news.

I recognise that outcrop! 😂

Wonderful, but we can't rely on 'ptered in fire fighters to always protect natural wonders. So many others have been lost anyhow.

but why it has to be a secret mission?

Im so moved that such thought a and care was taken. It restores faith.

We live in a time where we need irrigation systems in the bush....

We need to grow them else where...

This is why I created my game changing innovation, it’s because of places that I’ve visited and places this; fauna and flora. I could see that the behemoths including construction were not taking care in protecting our earth. Emissions are a problem. save planet. CatioMiles

This is a priceless collection!!
