Pakistan’s now ousted PM appeared to give opposition ultimatum: agree to fresh elections or I’ll bring in army

Imran Khan, who was ousted as Pakistan’s prime minister on Saturday, threatened to implement martial law rather than hand over power to the opposition, according to documents seen by the Guardian.

It appeared to threaten the opposition with the ultimatum that they should agree to Khan’s demand of fresh elections or he would bring in Pakistan’s powerful military to take control, as has happened repeatedly in the country’s history. “Imran Khan wanted to sack the army chief, but the forces received information about it and they thwarted his plan after they came to know about it,” said a security official on condition of anonymity. “Khan wanted to create a huge crisis to remain in power.”

The chief justice also took the unprecedented steps of instructing the supreme court to open its doors at midnight, to act in the event that Khan attempted to obstruct the legally mandated vote going ahead. It appears that the friction between Khan and the military came to a head on Saturday night. According to a report, Khan met with Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa, the army’s chief of staff, that night after trying to remove him earlier in the day. Bajwa told Khan to either step down or let the no-confidence vote go ahead, said Reuters.

“These fake stories are being spread to mislead the public and create anarchy in the country. All such malicious attempts will be defeated by the people of Pakistan,” said a statement by ISPR, the media wing of the military. “Pakistan armed forces are the guarantor of peace in Pakistan and the enemy is attempting to tarnish the image of armed forces.”

Good riddance He's an appalling autocrat Not suprised. Is this Anglo-American interference to preserve the crumbling Anglo world order as in Ukraine and the Middle East? If Imran Khan wanted to continue being PM, he should have behaved like a PM and not Russias' little bitch.
