Just 24 hours after getting a seemingly innocent text message, this Aussie was down $10,000 - and it really could happen to anyone.
Mr Ryder, from Townsville, Queensland, said he first realised something was awry when he received a text from Telstra about his online profile being changed – despite not being a customer with them.He then received a text from Optus telling him his number had been sent to a new e-sim. Within 24 hours, the scammer had taken $10,000 from his bank accounts, taken several Ubers through his bank details and also opened up a Zip Pay in his name.“Fortunately I’m close to retirement so that was part of a nest egg account. So I can do without it for a period of time,” he said about the money.
“We supported the customer through the process of engaging relevant authorities, including the police,” Optus said.
