By launching impeachment proceedings against US President Donald Trump, Nancy Pelosi has made the biggest gamble of her three decades-long political career.If the process goes smoothly, Trump will become only the third president in US history to earn the indignity of being impeached by the House of Representatives. But he will almost certainly not be removed from office thanks to the Republican-controlled Senate.
While Republican attack ads paint Pelosi as a hippy dippy liberal from San Fransisco, she is in fact a hard-nosed political operative and master number counter. It was she who wrangled the votes for "Obamacare" to pass the House and she has won the House speakership twice. As a rule, Americans may not like their presidents but they want to be the ones to boot them out of office – not the members of Congress. That's why polls have consistently shown a majority of Americans view Trump unfavourably but don't want him to be impeached.
It later emerged that Trump had spoken to the Ukrainian President about the business dealings of Joe Biden's son, and had withheld US aid from the country around the same time. For all the hype around Robert Mueller's report into Russian involvement in US politics, it did not trigger an impeachment move against the President.Pelosi no longer had a choice: she had to impeach Trump or stand accused of being a prime enabler of his misuse of power.On Russia, Democrats could credibly say they were investigating the issue carefully and methodically.
