Australians are being promised a swift boost to the economy from next week's federal budget as economists and industry leaders warn of a grim Christmas if the federal government relies too heavily on tax cuts to help workers.

He emphasised the need for the next round of measures to be "temporary, targeted [and] proportionate" in the same way as the government's earlier rounds of fiscal stimulus."Of course we would consider the effectiveness – that is the point with every single measure," he said. "The Morrison government is always there for the photo op, never there for the follow up. Once the Nikon stops clicking, the Prime Minister nicks off," Mr Albanese says in a speech to be delivered on Wednesday.Australian Retailers Association chief executive Paul Zahra said the government needed to "spend its way out of the recession" to sustain industries like retail, which employs about 1.2 million people.

"Any tax cut or relief will help support the hundreds of thousands of Australians and businesses facing hardship during the pandemic," she said. "Getting money into the hands of low income earners is much more effective as they are more likely to spend [it all]."
